Much of the press had dismissed it as a pale retread of the groundbreaking Ricky Gervais-led U. But over the next two seasons, the series, starring Steve Carell as the manager of a Scranton, Pennsylvania, paper company called Dunder Mifflin, gradually found its footing. On April 10th, , The Office topped itself with its best half-hour ever — and perhaps the best comedy episode of the decade. The previous season had seen Jim and Pam finally get together after years of flirtation; Michael had also found love — with Jan Levinson, his former boss. The result was a master class of dark comedy that few other shows would dare attempt, as well as 22 of the most brilliantly cringe-inducing minutes in TV history.
She was having such a time of it that I was embarrassed for her forgetting for a brief moment that this is just a show. As we all know, office romances — especially between a supervisor and a subordinate — are very problematic and plant the seeds for sexual harassment claims when things sour, which they almost always do. The employees generally claim that they felt compelled to continue in the relationship with the supervisor — or it would be their job on the line. Instead, we have to turn to policies and enforcement. Crafting a thoughtful policy on employee dating should help us sleep a little sounder at night. But the key to any policy is the proper enforcement behind it. So, knowing that inter-office relationships are just going to happen hopefully not quite like at Dunder Mifflin , we need to sharpen our pencils and think about what our realistic parameters are going to be.
Too often, we see office, residential, hospitality and retail design where the designer seems to have been unable to stop. And all that excess takes attention away from whatever good features there are. So, whenever we see a clear idea executed boldly, we pay attention. One of my favorite episodes of the U. The song appears again at the end of the episode when Jim reveals to Pam that he stole the CD, a sweet gesture to make Pam laugh. Jim plays the CD in their car as the song then plays over an epilogue showing the dinner guests after the party. Unfortunately, there is no real album by The Hunted, but the song works perfectly in the episode of The Office. When a comedy uses an original song for comic effect, it is a challenge for the song to sound believably real while being funny too.
